Sensory & Communication Guides

Developed by our board members Maud and Chris, these three practical guides support more accessible and inclusive healthcare by helping clients and healthcare providers better understand sensory and communication needs. The resources provide simple checklists and suggestions that clients can use to identify what helps them feel comfortable and understood during healthcare visits, and they offer practical strategies clinicians can use to reduce sensory overload, communicate more clearly, and individualise their approach. Together, the guides promote collaborative, person-centred care by encouraging open discussion of sensory preferences and communication styles so that healthcare environments and appointments work better for everyone.

Sensory Guide for Clients

The Sensory Accessibility Guide for Clients is a practical resource designed to support people with sensory processing differences in healthcare settings when receiving treatme. It explains why sensory needs matter and provides a clear, structured checklist covering vision, hearing, smell, touch, movement, temperature, interoception, and general multisensory factors. The guide helps clients identify simple, low-cost adjustments that can improve communication, comfort, and access to care, and supports collaborative discussions with clinicians to ensure sensory needs are understood, respected, and documented for future visits.

Sensory Guide for Healthcare Professionals and Services

The Sensory Accessibility Guide for Health Services is a practical resource designed to help healthcare providers create more inclusive and accessible environments for people with sensory processing differences. It outlines simple, no-cost adjustments that clinicians and frontline staff can implement immediately. The guide combines everyday inclusive practices with individualised adjustments across areas such as light, noise, smell, touch, movement, and interoception, and encourages clinicians to routinely ask about sensory needs and document preferred adjustments to support consistent, person-centred care.

Communication Guide

The Communication Access Guide is a practical resource that helps clients and healthcare providers better understand and support different communication styles. It explains common barriers that can arise in healthcare conversations, especially for neurodivergent people, and offers simple strategies to improve understanding and collaboration. The guide includes a checklist clients can use to identify their communication preferences, such as written instructions, extra processing time, or alternative ways to ask questions, and encourages sharing these preferences with clinicians so appointments can be clearer and more comfortable.
